WHAT IS MOMME?
WHAT IS THREAD COUNT? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

In detail product descriptions, you can see mm unit or momme, so what is momme ? Momme-(mm) is a unit traditionally used to measure the quality of silk fabrics. One momme = 4.340 grams per square meter; 8 mommes is approximately 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter.

Normally, the higher the momme weight, the more durable the weave, the more luxurious the fabric is, the more suitable it is for heavy-duty use, and the longer the shelf-life. But this does not mean that every type of fashion product using the momme index is as high as possible, each product will have a suitable momme fabric, for example.

  • Lu Vua Silk Fabric woven by Daisu Silk is used to make scarves, with moderate thickness so light, with a momme index of 8mm – 12mm;
  • Satin silk has an index of 16mm-19mm-21mm depending on the purpose of application in craft making of square towels, long dresses, home wear, pajamas, and bedding, etc.
  •
  • Twill Silk has an index of 16mm-19mm-21mm depending on the purpose of application in craft making of men/women shirt, scarf, dress, wedding dress, etc…

Besides the Momme unit, thread count is also a way to measure. In the market, customers are rarely provided with the thread count by retailers or manufacturers, or are generic and inaccurate. However, information on the thread count: mainly warp yarns also plays an important role, which is worth to know which silk fabric is suitable for the purpose of use by customers. For example:

  • Daisu ‘s Luvua silk fabric ( name of a type of silk fabric under Daisu silk’s copy right) is a plained- woven fabric with structure :1/3 ( a weaving theory); and with warp density of 9200 threads. Luvua ( people also call Habotai) is a kind of medium thickness fabric so it is suitable for making scarves, not popular for making shirts or other fashion items unless you want to be very sexy in a transparent fashion item
  • Daisu’s Twill Silk is a kind of silk fabric using a way of weaving that creates weaves on bias from left to right or from right to left on the right surface. These waves can easily be felt with eyes or hands and have density of warps of about 12000 threads. So the twill silk is durable, but still lustrous and soft. This twill silk is suitable for making Ao dai ( a Vietnam’s traditional long dress) , shirts, wedding dresses, or sleep wears even silk blankets, pillows and so on that are very luxury and sexy
  • Daisu’s Hoang Hau Satin Silk fabric (a name of a type of silk fabric under Daisu silk’s copy right) is a type of silk fabric woven in the way of satin weave ( a popular name of a weaving technique), structure ¼ (weaving theory).
